Annual cost of utilities: what a year of home bills looks like

Utility bills arrive monthly, so the year is easy to underestimate. National averages from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Energy Information Administration give context — your bill is the number that matters.

Why monthly utility bills hide the year

A summer electric spike and a winter gas spike look like separate problems when you pay them one month at a time. Adding the same categories across twelve months (or using the yearly line on an annualized budget) shows whether housing systems are the largest recurring cost after rent or the mortgage.

For context, BLS reports that utilities, fuels, and public services averaged $4,736 per consumer unit in 2024. EIA’s residential average electric bill was about $142.26 per month in 2024 — roughly $1707 if that month repeated all year.

How to annualize a bill that changes every month

Pull the last 12 statements if you have them and add the dollars, or average three recent months and multiply by 12 when seasons are mild. Per Year uses the same rules everywhere: weekly × 52, monthly × 12, yearly as typed.

Do not use a single peak month as if it were typical. The free calculator lets you type the average you trust, then shows the yearly total instantly on your phone.

What this page does not claim

National averages mix climates, home sizes, and fuel types. They are orientation, not advice, and they are not a savings guarantee. Per Year does not connect to your utility account or cancel anything.

Calculate your annual utility cost

Turn variable monthly utility bills into one yearly household total.

  1. Gather statements. Collect electric, gas, water, trash, and phone bills for a typical period, ideally up to 12 months.
  2. Convert each bill to a yearly amount. Multiply a typical monthly amount by 12, or add 12 months of actual charges.
  3. Enter your numbers in Per Year. Open the free calculator, add each utility line, and replace any example with your amount.
  4. Review the yearly total. Use the yearly figure for budgeting. Optionally open the free sample Annual Bills Plan to see a set-aside calendar layout.
