Cost of a baby in the first year: real expenses

New parents face recurring monthly costs that add up over the year: diapers, formula or pumping supplies, childcare, increased health insurance, wipes, and constantly outgrown clothes. See what those bills total as a yearly cost.

Common baby costs in the first year

These are example prices from October 2026, representing typical costs in urban areas. Your actual expenses will vary based on location, childcare type (daycare vs nanny vs family help), feeding method (breastfeeding vs formula vs combination), insurance plan, and whether you buy new or secondhand. This is not financial advice.

Childcare dominates the total

The example above shows $1,200 per month for childcare, which becomes $14,400 per year—more than half the total baby cost. Daycare costs vary dramatically by region: urban centers can exceed $2,000/month for infant care, while smaller cities or family arrangements may be much less.

If you have a stay-at-home parent, paid family leave, or family help, your childcare cost might be zero or much lower. Enter your actual childcare bill in the calculator to see your real total.

Formula vs breastfeeding costs

The example lists $150 per month for formula, which is $1,800 per year. Breastfeeding is often described as free, but pumping supplies (pump, bottles, bags, replacement parts), lactation consultant visits, and nursing clothes are real costs.

Many families use a combination of breastfeeding and formula. Use the free calculator to model your actual feeding costs, whether it's full formula, partial formula, or pumping supplies only.

One-time vs recurring costs

This guide focuses on recurring monthly bills because those are what compound into a yearly total. One-time purchases like a crib, car seat, stroller, and bassinet are real costs, but they don't recur every month.

The Per Year calculator is designed for recurring bills. If you want to include one-time baby gear, you can spread it across the first year (divide the total one-time cost by 12 and enter it as a monthly amount) to see it in your annual total.

What changes after the first year

Diapers continue until potty training (typically 2–3 years). Formula stops when you transition to whole milk around 12 months, reducing that line to regular milk and solid food costs. Childcare often continues, though some parents find toddler care slightly less expensive than infant care. Clothes and gear costs continue but shift to toddler sizes and activities.

The one-time Annual Bills Plan shows you a 5-year outlook of your costs, so you can see how removing formula or switching to part-time childcare changes your household spending over time.

Planning for the cost

If you're expecting, use the calculator to estimate your new recurring bills. Add your current household bills, then add the baby costs you anticipate. The yearly total shows you how much your household spending will increase.

Compare that increase to your take-home income after any parental leave or reduced hours. If the new total is more than 70% of your income, you have very little room for unexpected costs or savings. Look for cuts in your existing bills before the baby arrives.
